THE FESTIVAL

The European Film Week 2022 in Riyadh is organised by the European Union Delegation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with the support and sponsorship of APG. Taking place on 15-22 JUNE 2022, it will be the 1st European Film Showcase held in Saudi Arabia. The European Film Week is aimed at facilitating cultural exchange, promoting European cinema, and fostering contacts between the European & Saudi filmmakers.

THE ORGANIZER

The European Union is a unique political & economic union between 27 European countries, which has delivered more than half a century of peace, stability and prosperity, helped raise living standards and launched a single European currency: the euro. The EU Delegation to Saudi Arabia works on many areas of cooperation between EU and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including political dialogue, economic and trade issues, regional security, public diplomacy, education as well as climate change and transition to green energy/economy and Culture.

Arabia Pictures Group is a multifaceted media and entertainment company based in Saudi Arabia. THE SELECTION

From documentary filmmaking to heartfelt fictions, the selection of the 1st edition of the European Film Festival will offer our audiences a rich and diverse palette of not only genres but impactful storytelling. Many of the selected films have an inspirational message: be it to overcome any disabilities you may have, be it the empowerment of women or be it the ongoing fight to save our environment. Other stories will be very entertaining in showcasing thrilling adventures and comic reliefs. We're looking forward to a successful 1st edition!

Moderator's Biography

Summer is an award-winning Saudi actress, who starred in 2 feature films and a number of shorts and TV shows. She is one of the pioneers in the film scene with her first-ever role in 2014, her ever-growing interest in people and human connection took her to different worlds of expression and creation. She is now in early pre-production for her directorial debut short.

Grégory Magne grew up in Burgundy, France. In 2007, he left to cross the Atlantic alone from La Rochelle to Salvador de Bahia. He embarks with a camera to tell his daily life and shoots his first film, Vingt-quatre heures par jour de mer. He has since navigated between documentaries and fictions, between scripts and directing, between TV and Cinema. In 2012, he wrote and directed with Stéphane Viard his first feature film, L'Air de Rien, a dark comedy in which Michel Delpech embodies a Michel Delpech riddled with debts. The film reveals Grégory Montel in his first first-role. Perfumes is his second feature film.

Matti Rockenbauch on Legal Aspects in Filmmaking

Moderator's Biography

Director and scenario writer living and working between Germany and Saudi Arabia. He is a graduate of the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg with a specialization in Scenic Film Direction. Mujtaba founded the Amwaj Theatrical Troupe in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom, and he has received a number of awards for his plays in additions to his films. In 2015, he was chosen as the best Saudi director as part of the program “In The Eyes of Saudis” by MBC. He also directed and wrote many films between the Arab world and Europe that were showcased in festivals.

Matti Rockenbauch LL.M. (Michigan), is an entertainment lawyer based in Berlin working at VON HAVE FEY, one of Germany’s leading entertainment law firms. He is specialized in all matters of film and TV production, with a deep understanding of the development, financing and production of films and series for cinema, TV and streaming providers. Matti advises German, Saudi and international clients – such as producers, distributors, screen writers, directors, actors and other talents – supporting them in contract drafting, negotiations, regulatory issues and general business and legal affairs.

Moderator's Biography

Muhammad is one of the top Entertainment influencer in Saudi Arabia with 5349 audience and 2.71% engagement rate on Instagram, he is a TV host (Rohhal on SBC) and radio host (Whats good on SRFM)

Marios Piperides was born in 1975 in Nicosia, Cyprus. After studying Film Production in the US, he returned to Cyprus in 2002. As the audiovisual sector is small in Cyprus, Piperides had the opportunity to gain experience in every aspect of filmmaking. In 2005 he founded his production company, amp Filmworks and produced and co-produced award winning titles. As a writer/director he has made a documentary and two short films. The main theme in his work is the ongoing division of Cyprus and their need to overcome their own prejudices. Smuggling Hendrix is Piperides' first feature.

The Birth of Green Film with Alberto Battocchi

Moderator's Biography

Roua started her career in 2001 in the advertisement field where she made a big successful record as one of the pioneer Saudi women at that time.In 2008 she stablished an Event Management company with a turnover of more than 30 Million SAR in 2011. In 2013 she joined MBC group as head of radios and in 2019 she was the CEO of Sadaf the largest Production house in Saudi Arabia owned by MBC. She is a member of YPO (Young Presidents' Organization), Arab leaders, UNFPA, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia and she holds an executive MBA from Thunderbird US.

After a degree in Psychology and a PhD in Cognitive Science,he worked as a researcher in Human-Computer Interaction. In 2011 He left the academic environment to pursue his passion for cinema. After a filmmaking course at the London Film Academy, he worked as assistant director in various national and international film productions and then he collaborated with the Trentino Film Commission with tasks of assistance to audiovisual productions and launch the Green Cinema. In Trentino Sviluppo from 2020, working with the Film Commission Area.
